Likewise Agnes is treated like a mistake Tom thinks he made despite him claiming he loves her. Ellen‘s declaration that she loves Tom because she happened to pass him once in the woods months earlier seems laughable, and it makes her seem like a tool for Tom. Specifically (and spoilers for the first 80 pages I guess) I have a problem with the way the characters of Agnes and Ellen are used in relation to Tom, and especially the sexual encounter between Ellen and Tom just hours after Agnes‘s death when Tom is basically incapacitated. Help me reddit community before I commit myself to this 1000 page novel!
I was given The Pillars of the Earth for Christmas and was very excited about it, but now about 80 pages in I’m having some misgivings.
